Comparison of 201 and 304 stainless steel flanges – How to distinguish

Comparison of 201 and 304 stainless steel flanges – How to distinguish

Many new technicians mistakenly think that stainless steel 201 and 304 are the same, so the stainless steel flanges of 201 and 304 are also the same. But no!… Each type of flange has its characteristics and properties. This leads to many mistakes right from the material purchasing stage, wasting time and money and slowing down the construction progress. If you still cannot distinguish between these two materials, read our article right away!

Are 201 and 304 stainless steel flanges the same?

This is a question that is discussed a lot on technical forums, steel materials, etc. Although these two types of flanges are made of stainless steel, in reality, they have many different properties and characteristics. Therefore, you cannot consider them as one and use them completely interchangeably. Using the wrong type of flange can directly affect the safety of the user and the life of the system.

Flange leaks and flange fractures that cause fires and explosions sometimes come from this wrong choice. Therefore, understand clearly what type of flange your system needs. At the same time, understand the specific characteristics of each flange manufacturing material to be able to choose the right flange type for your project.

Comparison of 201 and 304 stainless steel flanges

As mentioned, these two types of flanges have their characteristics. They include composition, mechanical properties, physical properties, etc. Specifically:

Composition of stainless steel flanges 201 and 304

Ingredient Inox 304 Inox 201
Iron Balance Balance
Carbon 0.0 – 0.07% 0.0 – 0.15%
Chromium 17.50 – 19.50% 16 – 18%
Manganese 0.0 – 2.0% 5.5 – 7.5%
Silicon 0.0 – 1.0% 0.0 – 1.00%
Phosphorous 0.0 – 0.05% 0.0 – 0.06%
Sulfur 0.0 – 0.03% 0.0 – 0.03%
Nickel 8.0 – 10.5% 3.5 – 5.5%
Nitrogen 0.0 – 0.11% 0.0 – 0.25%
  • Stainless steel flange 304: In stainless steel 304, chromium is the main component with 18–20% of the total mass. It helps increase the corrosion resistance of this type of stainless steel. Nickel in stainless steel 304 helps this material have a characteristic shine. In addition, in stainless steel 304, people also find manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and carbon.
  • Stainless Steel Flange 201: Although chromium is also the main component in this flange, its ratio is lower than 304 (about 16–18%). Along with that is nickel; the ratio is also much lower than stainless steel 304. Therefore, the shine is not as good.

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel 201 and 304

304 Stainless Steel Flange 201 stainless steel flange
Withstands higher temperatures and is therefore less susceptible to thermal abrasion. This is because, at around 870–900 degrees Celsius, the structure of 304 stainless steel will change from ferritic to austenitic. In which:
+ Ferritic steel: is pure iron. High strength but low corrosion resistance
Austenitic steel: is transformed iron with high strength, toughness, and better corrosion resistance.
Heat resistance is quite good but not as good as 304 stainless steel, about 677°C (1250°F). It is susceptible to corrosion at high temperatures or in acidic or alkaline environments. When exposed to higher temperatures, heat resistance decreases.

Machinability of stainless steel 201 and 304

304 stainless steel flange 201 stainless steel flange
Because 304 stainless steel is stronger and more flexible, it is more difficult to process. Specifically, the Rockwell B hardness of 304 stainless steel is from 70 – 92 HRB and the Brinell hardness is from 123 – 363 HB. Normally, technicians need a large machining force or precise machining technology to process and manufacture quality 304 stainless steel flanges. Easier to bend, cut, and weld because of its lower hardness than 304 stainless steel. Specifically, the Rockwell B hardness of 201 stainless steel is from 95 to 98 HRB, and the Brinell hardness is from 210 to 240 HB. However, it also conducts heat and electricity less well, so it is less used in high-end applications like 304 stainless steel.

Applications of stainless steel 201 and 304

Inox 304  Inox 201
More widely applied. Especially in:

  • Medical Equipment Manufacturing
  • Chemical Industrial Equipment Manufacturing
  • Storage Tank Manufacturing
  • Water Treatment Equipment Manufacturing
Less commonly used for Manufacturing household products such as door handles, dish sets, wash basins, and interior decorations.

There are many different types of flanges on the market today. In addition to being classified based on manufacturing materials, they are also divided by structural structure. You can see more common types of flanges for more useful knowledge!

It can be seen that in most of the characteristics, the 304 stainless steel flange is more prominent than the 201 stainless steel flange. Therefore, the flange made from this material is also more popular. Along with that, the price of this stainless steel flange is also higher.
In addition to the flange made from 304 and 201 stainless steel, we also have 316 stainless steel. Although this type of stainless steel is less popular, 316 stainless steel flanges are still used in projects with special requirements.

How to distinguish between 201 stainless steel flange and 304 stainless steel flange

There are many ways for you to distinguish between 201 stainless steel flanges and 304 flanges. Below are our suggestions. We believe that with these suggestions, you will easily buy the product you need. Minimize unnecessary confusion.

  • Distinguishing by the eyes: 304 stainless steel flanges are usually brighter than 201 flanges. 304 stainless steel will have a characteristic silver-white color, while 201 stainless steel will have a light yellow color.
  • Distinguishing flanges by magnet: 201 stainless steel flanges will stick to magnets better because they contain more nickel.
  • Distinguishing by weight and thickness: Normally, 304 stainless steel flanges will have greater thickness and weight. Just use a measuring device, and you can know for sure which is the 201 flange and which is the 304.
