How to calculate the weight of square steel tube and rectangular steel tube in detail

For construction students or new technicians, knowing how to calculate the weight of a square steel tube is almost mandatory. Especially for projects that require steel tubes, this is very necessary. If you do not know this formula, Bao Tin Steel will suggest it to help you calculate and choose materials more accurately. See below!

Currently on the market, there are 2 types of steel tubes: square steel tube and rectangular steel tube. You must clearly understand which type of your project needs to apply the appropriate formula for calculating the weight of a steel tube. Below is how to calculate the weight of steel for each type:

Square steel tube calculation formula

Square steel mass (kg) = [4 x T(mm) x A(mm) – 4 x T(mm) x T(mm)] x Z(g/cm3) x 0.001 x L(m)

In there:

  • A: Dimension of one side of the square tube.
  • T: Thickness of the square steel tube.
  • L: Length of the steel tube.
  • Z: Is the density of steel equal to 7.85 (g/cm3)

For example: Given a 40×40 square steel tube, 1.2 mm thick, 6 m long

=> Applying the above formula we have: The weight of a square steel tube is:

(4 x 1.2 x 40 – 4 x 1.2 x 1.2) x 7.85 x 0.001 x 6 = 8.77 (Kg)

How to calculate the weight of rectangular steel tube

Steel volume (kg) = [ 2 x T(mm) x {A1(mm)+ A2(mm) }- 4xT(mm) x T(mm)] x Z (g/cm3) x 0.001x L(m )

In there:

  • T: thickness
  • W: width
  • L: length
  • A1: length of side 1
  • A2: length of side 2
  • Z: Density is 7.85 (g/cm3)

For example: Given a rectangular steel tube 13×26, 0.9mm thick and 6m long. How do you calculate the square steel in kg?

=> Applying the above formula we have: the formula for calculating the mass of a rectangular steel tube:

(2 x 0.9 x (13+26) – 4 x 0.9 x 0.9) x 7.85 x 0.001 x 6= 3.15 (kg).
