What is Q235 steel? Technical characteristics and specifications of Q235 steel grade

Bao Tin Steel currently distributes Q235 steel and Q235 steel plates. This is one of the steel lines used in many large and small applications. However, not everyone knows clearly what Q235 steel is. What are its characteristics and properties? If you are also interested in this steel line, read the article below for your desired information!

What is Q235 steel?

Q235 steel is a kind of steel from China. It is produced by the hot rolling method, meeting the GB/T700 standard. This steel has a low-carbon structure and is divided into 4 grades: Q235A, Q235B, Q235C, and Q235D.

>> You can read more in the article: Hot rolled steel plate to understand the characteristics of this steel line better.

Q235 steel plate has a density of 7.85 g/cm3, tensile strength of 370–500 MPa, and yield strength of 235 MPa (for 16 mm steel bar or steel plate). Moderate carbon content makes Q235 steel or Q235 steel plate highly appreciated for its overall performance as well as strength, ductility, and weldability.

Technical specifications of Q235 steel plate and Q235 steel grade

Below are the general specifications of Q235. Understanding these specifications will help you understand the size and properties of this steel plate line and the chemical and mechanical properties of the Q235 steel grade currently available on the market:

For Q235 steel plate

  • Steel plate width: 1510mm to 2300mm
  • Plate thickness: 1.5mm to 100mm
  • Standard: PRC standard and GB/T700 -2006 (China), JIS G3101 -2004 (Japan), ASTM A36/ A36M-05 (USA), DIN 17100-80 (Germany) and EN10025-2-2006 (Europe)
  • Steel plate length: 6-12m.

For steel grade Q235

Steel grades equivalent to Q235 are very diverse, such as SS400, CT3, and A36. This makes it easier for buyers to choose and replace materials.

Q235 steel has a diverse composition, including manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), silicon (Si), and other elements. Q235 steel grade has a density of 7.85 g/cm3, tensile strength of 370–500 MPa, and yield strength of 235 MPa (for 16mm steel bars or steel plates).

However, if comparing the strength of Q235 and Q345 steel, Q235 has worse properties. Although they have the same material density of 7.85 g/cm3, Q345 steel has a higher tensile strength of 470–630 MPa and yield strength of 345 MPa.

(If you don’t know, steel strength is simply understood as the parameters that characterize the steel’s ability to withstand external forces or environmental impacts. Specifically, it is the level of tensile, compressive, bending, pulling, and shearing resistance of steel and is measured in Mpa units).
