Learn about SS400 steel
SS400 steel is a common carbon steel produced in plate form during hot rolling steelmaking, with a temperature above 1000 °C according to Japanese standard JIS G3101.
Meaning of SS400 material: SS is the abbreviation of steel structure; 400 means tensile strength ≥ 400 MPa.
SS400 steel is cheap and highly flexible, playing an important role in construction, bridges, civil works, and mechanical equipment structures.
SS400 steel has high tensile strength and is often blue, black, or dark in color, with rounded, rough edges. It is widely used to manufacture furniture, vehicles, and household appliances.
Some SS400 steel plates are commonly produced in the following main forms: steel plates and sheets, steel strips in coil form, U-H-V – I shaped steel, steel bars, etc.

Chemical composition
The following table shows the chemical composition of JIS SS400 steel. Please note that carbon (C) content is not specified in JIS G3101, only phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content.

Physical properties
The following table shows the material properties of JIS SS400, including density and specific gravity, melting point, specific heat, resistivity, elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, coefficient of linear expansion, magnetic permeability, etc.

Test standards:
- For SS400 steel plates and strips weighing more than 50 tons, at least 2 test samples must be taken.
- For SS400-shaped steel weighing more than 50 tons, at least 2 test samples must also be taken.
- For SS400 solid steel weighing more than 50 tons, at least 2 test samples must be taken.
Testing and testing tensile strength and bending test methods must comply with the provisions of the JIS G0416 standard and Appendix 1 of this standard.
